  1. Thinking of buying the Dynex® - 20" 720p Widescreen Flat-Panel LCD HDTV/DVD Combo (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8532331&type=product&id=1193234237013). Only want to buy it if I can hack it and make it region free though.

Model does not show on hack list. Can anyone help?

    thanks

We don't recommend combo units around here. They almost never have hacks for region free mode. You should note that the DVD player will almost certainly stop working for you after a few years and then that part of the device will be absolutely useless to you and you'll have to buy a new DVD player anyway. You'd really be best served to just get a separate TV and DVD player. Worse yet, suppose a failure on the part of the DVD player also has a negative effect on the TV and makes you have to send the whole thing off for a very expensive repair. I don't think you'll be happy if that happens.

All DVD players can't be made region free, so there probably aren't any hacks. I've never heard of a TV/DVD combo that can be made region free.

Add to that: 20" wide screen? HD? Really small! I have a 28" 16:9, and when watching 4:3 material on that, it's like a 20" TV.
A 20" wide would be like a 14" with 4:3 material. OK for the bed room perhaps?

Exactly! It's for bedroom where we dont want clutter of multiple boxes and cables. This is sleek with minimal footprint

  5. I agree with jman98 about not buying a combo unit unless it's a really good price and it has inputs so you can hookup another DVD player in the future.

Not all players can be unlocked ("hacked"). In addition to that, most specialty players (auto,DVD/VHS combo, DVD/TV combo, etc) cannot be unlocked.

If there are any known codes, they will be in the DVD hacks section.

Let me join in opposition to the purchase of a combo unit. The DVD drive has a far lower life expectancy than the TV.

When it dies (and it will) it may make the entire unit unusable.

Re Dynex - its a Best Buy housebrand. Different models are made by different vendors, I'd try to determine who actually made the product before I bought it.

Often the only way to find hacks is to research the real maker. This has been the source of the hacks for many of the Best Buy Insignia Brand Products - people apply the hacks for similar LG models to them.
