    hello

i've recently captured a whole load of camcorder tapes as avi's and i now notice that there is an 'avi dv' option in my premiere program.

essentially, i was looking to capture as best quality setting - have i messed up or are they the same?

    cheers!

What were the capture properties ? What codecs did you use ?

Run the captured avi through mediainfo and advise.

DV will be best unless you captured uncompressed or used another lossless codec such as huffy.

Set project to DV and capture DV. That is an exact first generation copy of the data on tape. The only reason to capture uncompressed is if you are integrating DV clips into an uncompressed project.

If you capture to "AVI" you are capturing uncompressed or with an associated codec. This will not get you first generation quality and should only be done for good reason.

  4. You have nothing to worry about.

The DV AVI option tells Premiere to use a DV encoder from MainConcept - generally regarded as one of the fastest and highest quality.

If you choose the other AVI option, you can select one of many encoders for different formats. One of them is the default DV encoder on the computer - using the Microsoft DV encoder.

Capture-wise, the encoder is irrelevant. The file on the disk will be the original DV data wrapped in an AVI "container".

The choice between the MainConcept and generic DV encoder comes when you render your project.

With Premiere you can capture DV format yet have an uncompressed project. In that case your capture will be DV format and decompression is done when you render the timeline. I suggest you work in a DV project to prevent decompression.
