  3. Ecost + refurb, nothing can possibly go wrong there.

You might want to look here before buying anything from ecost:
    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/eCost

    2.99/10 6 month rating, 3.07/10 lifetime rating.

Many, many ecost horror stories on the net. If it doesn't work, don't plan on getting it fixed or replaced.

    Recorder reviews:

    http://www.amazon.com/JVC-DRMH30S-Recorder-Drive-Silver/dp/B0002V240G

    4 1 star, 2 5 star, not good.

  4. Reviews have to looked at carefully, how many happy people have not posted reviews?

I bought my jvc 9911u there 4 years ago, all good and a panasonic telephone system, and thats from USA Border free to Canada which they no longer offer, sadly.

They are just a warehouse style, so I suspect its the products which are cranky if they fail.

  5. Just look around and you'll see no shortage of ecost complaints. Less than 1 in 3 good reviews is bad no matter how you look at it. Browse that reseller site and you'll find many reputable dealers with high reviews. I've never dealt with ecost, I'm careful who I buy from, but I've seen some of the many horror stories from people that have.

The don't stand by their products in any way. If it has problems just expect to eat the cost of the product.

Wow that price is good though! Where to they come up with the $99 list price I mean I can't believe something like this wasn't >$500 when it came out and does anybody know when that was? Is this one of the JVCs that LS likes? It must be a real JVC and not a re-badge like the current ones.
$24 shipping is kind of steep but it looks like one can use Paypal, which should help for recouping any money if the product is defective.
Thinking about it...........I wonder where they get a decent supply of something like this....

    Edit:
Wow, after reading the reviews provided in that link I think I'll pass. Everything is bad other than the picture quality. It doesn't sound like I'd have the patience for something like that. Oh it looks to be a '05 model judging from the Amazon reviews and one poster mentioned $400 which makes more sense than $99 list.
Victoriabears, how did you find this product on the website? Other than your link I couldn't find anything like it on ecosts website. Searching for JVC DVDRs only yielded the cheap new non-JVCs and no HDD models

  7. I have had many happy purchases from ecost.
The biggest complaints I have seen are usually in regards to there 'Hot Sales' and buying club items not being available at times of purchase.

I almost bought this unit when I saw it posted here last night but changed my mind at the last minute mostly because of the shipping charge, and secondly because I really didn't need it.

Hmmm, first time reality ever won out over a desire for me. I must be getting old.

  8. Tempting. But one reviewer said it did not have a built-in tuner. Is that true? Makes it kind of useless for me then. But I was ready to buy it before reading that.

It has a Analog tuner but not a digital (ATSC/QAM) tuner. It would need a external tuner to get the .X channels.

If you do some research on ecost, it's not uncommon to receive a completely different product from the one advertised. I saw that $99 too. This may be a non-HDD recorder. Bait and switch seems to be common from ecost. That's part of why they get 3/10 ratings.

    jjeff,

There's a hint above the thumbnail image: Electronics > Recorders.
Typing in Recorders in the Search box also pulls up a JVC SR-HD1250US blu-ray player/HDD recorder for $1,630.

Generally the S on the end means silver while a K would indicate black.

The price isn't bad - I was going to craigslist a Poloroid 160GB for the same amount.

eCost, however, has been a bane to my existence: unfullfilled rebates; not shipping an item; you name it.

I finally quit shopping over there.

  16. I have this model and the only problem I've had is it stopped transferring from the HDD to the DVD side, DVD still play great though so it's weird that it won't record onto a DVD. I just us it like a DVR and it works great. I used to work for JVC repairing DVD recorders and this one came in as a return from a customer. He said he had a lot of problems with it but I never had any of the problem he described happen to me.
