I have had .avi files that can fit on CD but after burning the subtitles are lost.
There is no associated subtitle file, just the .avi file itself.
Is there a method to retain the subtitles?

If you are burning as a AVI, the subtitle, usually .srt, is in the same folder and has the same name as the movie. Just the extension is different, .srt or similar. A Divx player should see it.
If you don't have a subtitle file, then they may be burned permanently into the video. AVI video with a subtitle file is burned as a data disc. I don't know that VCDs can have separate subtitles. Maybe closed caption? If so, you would need to burn them into the video.
Look to 'What is' VCD to the upper left on this page for the VCD specs: https://www.videohelp.com/vcd
VCD is a low resolution choice. You would be better off with Xvid/Divx with separate subs and a set top player or computer to play them back.
Lot's more to it all. You might take a look in our Subtitle Forum.
