So I tried connecting 3 different external usb hard drives all formatted fat32. On the DVD player display it switches from 'USB MODE' to 'USB DATA', but I don't see the file explorer pop up. Am I doing something wrong? Or are all 3 of my hard drives not compatible? I also hear my hard drive spinning

All hard drives have their own external power source and are formatted in fat32.

The manual said I'm supposed to see 'USB ERR' if its not compatible so I still have some hope.

    Firmware: YGB7821A

It's a bit unclear if USB HDDs will work for video from this in a ad:
The 400V also has a USB front-in host, which means that you can also play content on your USB Audio player or Memory stick. You can even play Digital photographs while simultaneously listening to music.
That makes it sound like just audio player input and flash drives. But your manual should give the proper information. Does it work properly with USB thumbdrives/flashdrives?

But others may have experience with the unit.

    And welcome to our forums.

Hi first off are you talking about the Pioneer DV-400V?
Because if so the external drive needs to either FAT OR FAT16 NOT FAT32.
I know that the size of the partition makes a difference on which file allacation table you use.
What i did was divide the drive up into different sizes to accomedate which fat I used.

    Mines a 40GB with 4 x 8.4GB PARTIONS.(Used partion magic from powerquest.)

All works fine with my 700mb XviD films.

    Hope this helps.

It is a Pioneer DV-400V. The manual says it does use Fat 16/32. I have partition magic. How do I fix the partition table? My partition table is also currently set to Logical...should it be primary?

For those that want to know. The external hard drive has to be in PRIMARY partition. I used partition magic to do that. Now it works perfectly.
