  1. so i have a 30 minute movie i am uploading to youtube, and i need the best compression i can get with the limit they give me of 100MB. My first attempt i used the MPEG4 [.MOV] (ffmpegx) codec with 1516kbps bitrate and dropped the resolution down to 425x350. the file sizes were perfect, but alot of the shots are at nighttime and the blacks show so pixalated its hard for even me, the editor to distinguish what im looking at.

my straight up question is, what is the best codec/settings i would want to use for a youtube video, with keeping my 100mb limit.

I read that YouTube is converting their assets to H264 so why not use that? Try the iPod (640x) setting but use a width and height that conforms to the "rule of 16's" - perhaps 432x352.

Modify the bitrate to stay within the 100MB limit and set the ME function (in Options) to Exhaustive to maximize quality.

Another advantage to doing it this way is that you may drop the video into your 5G iPod and watch it there (or on your TV with the appropriate cable).

Let us know how it goes.

  3. Taken from YouTube's FAQ's ...

    We recommend the following settings:

    MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
    320x240 resolution
    MP3 audio
    30 frames per second
Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your videos look better on YouTube.

BTW, if it's even possible, you'll have a hard time fitting 30 mins into 100MB... you may have to split it.

Split it into 3, less than 10 min parts.
    Encode with h264, 320*240.

Who knows what youtube does/will do on the back end with flash and resolutions?
4x0*3x0 could just be the display resolution, with a smaller actual resolution.

  5. does you tube accept the h264 codec? I personally have not tried, but i usually us the ffmpeg Xvid settings with the same 1516 on smaller files and the result turns out really nice on you tube.... as far as fitting it into 100MB i agree with splitting it up. I think the 100MB limit was to curb the people uploading whole tv show episodes in a high quality (those tv studios were getting kinda cranky about that)

    h264 on youtube is fine.
You can get codec down to 30 mb for 10 min.
Or around 100 mb for 10 min with other codecs
Depends on how long you want to wait for the clip to upload.
Stay under 10 min and 100 mb and its fine.

iphone h264 and youtube should be more fun.

I have used h264 compression, I have used iPhone conversion.
It looks good on my computer , after conversion, but,
when I upload to YouTube I always come out looking low resolution and pixilated.

    So why is this?

Yes yes , I am playing it back in the same sized player.
    And it still looks bad.

    Thanks

AFAIK, YouTube transcodes everything into Flash. So, even though you upload a nicely encoded h.264 file, they convert it into something else. That's why the result looks different (and worse).
