I'm sure this has been asked a lot here. I kind of gathered that there are hundreds of ways of doing anything, but i'd like to know what's this site's preferred way of converting vob files, ripped from say DVDs using DVD Decrypter, to avi or wmv, or any format that is compatible for editing programmes and online hosting sites like youtube. Ripping scenes to youtube for example seems to be very common these days. How does everybody do it? What's the most popular way? thx

Yes, lots of ways. After decrypting, (DVDFab HD Decrypter recommended) you might try using DVD Shrink to cut out the clips, then use one of the available AVI encoder programs to convert to the desired format. I have also used VirtualDub Mod to open the VOBs directly, then cut out what I didn't want and convert the rest to Xvid or other AVI type formats. Add Lame MP3 for the audio and the Xvid codec, and you should be set.

One thing to consider. If you are needing to reduce the size quite a bit and keep some quality, you will need to learn a bit about encoder settings. That's one reason I use VDM, as I can 'fine tune' the encoder settings to get what I want. VD or VDM also has a hundred or so filters available, so you have lots of options there if needed. The all-in-one converters are really made for whole videos, not clips, so they may be easy, but may not be too flexible.

That's the first two ways that come to mind.

Cut out what you want with dvd shrink in the reauthoring mode. Save as a VIDEO_TS folder. Open it with AutoGK and convert to avi xvid. Upload to youtube.

But you are NOT allowed to upload clips from a copyrighted DVD.

Recommend starting with AutoGK, it's pretty easy and straight forward. If you get further down the road and want more control of your end-products you might want to jump into avisynth/virtualdub and/or x264 using a good codec and container format.
