    would it be possible to set vlc ( or any other software for cd/dvd; wmv doesn't work in my pc) as a default? if yes, how?

    Yes, one way is right click on the type of file you want it to play, choose open with, then select choose program make sure the "Always use the Selected program to open this kind of file" check box is ticked, Then choose VLC and done.
