I had the same problem. I can see that it's been a while since you asked, but since I tried to google the solution and came to this thread, I thought I'd post a solution here:
1. Go to VLC settings (ctrl+p).
2. Show all settings (bottom left corner)
3. Under audio, choose Output modules and DirectX and select speaker configuration: Stereo.
4. Save settings! -
Thanks for the info. Worked great. I was a bit confounded as to how to get the setting to stick.
