  1. Hi there,

I am currently experimenting with converting my DVDs to Nero Digital AVC. I would prefer to play the files in Media Player Classic, as it gives me a much smoother playback than Nero Showtime (and is the only non-Nero application which I have been to get to work with all features (multiple audio-tracks, subtitles, chapters)).

The problem is that with some files (not all) the color scheme for the subtitles gets screwed up. Fx after converting Edward Scissorhands the subtitles gets shown in all black (which makes them pretty hard to watch in the darker scenes ). This doesn't happen in ShowTime or for that matter in Windows Media Player where they are displayed as white with a black border.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it in the Haali Media Splitter? Or perhaps Direct VobSub? And does Direct VobSub do anything when displaying those embedded subtitles or is it only for external subtitles? If anyone knows about the intricacies of mp4/AVC decoding please help me, cause I have no idea where to begin.

    Thanks in advance

Does both wmp and mpc use haali media splitter or/and vsfilter/vobsub? Check if you see haali media splitter and vsfilter in the system tray while you play.

  3. Yes, both are installed. Actually it seems like it's somewhere in the Haali splitter or in DirectVobsub that something goes wrong, cause if I disable the Haali splitter (I have the K-lite Codec Pack so I do that in Codec Tweak Tool) I get the subtitles in the correct colors, but off course then I can't turn them on/off.

Is there any other mp4-splitter that works with MPC? (just for test purposes). I've noticed that Video Lan displays the subtitles correctly and that one uses it's own splitter right? Unfortunately VLC doesn't support Nero Digital chapters and generally doesn't feel as controllable as MPC.

  4. I might add that I've tried to disable DirectVobsub and use ffdhows subtitle filter instead, which still ended up with the wrong colors (although slightly different ones).

What version of MPC you're using?
Mine is an old one, and still works fine.

  6. Update: Well, I still haven't figured out what is wrong with my setup, but I've decided to use the second best solution. Since some subtitle colors apparently doesn't get screwed up (either by Nero, MPC, DVobSub or whatever), whenever I come across a movie that gives me the wrong subtitle colors on a 5min test-encode in Nero Recode, I simply use IFOedit to change the subtitle colors in the IFO file to the colors I know works (ie. pure white with black borders).

Anyway, thanx to those of you who tried to help
