I wanted to know if the artwork i use can cause serious legal actions. like for instance if i draw characters similar to japanese art work or if i draw characters that are more squared face and rounded like how powerpuff girls are would i be subject to anything

If the art is an obvious rip-off of an original work and has no satirical value then you may find yourself in trouble. If it is simply in the Japanese Manga or Anime style then you can do pretty much anything you like. There is a difference between imitating a style and copying a character or design.
