  1. Hello folks,

I am trying to convert my wedding video to DVD. The wedding video is on VHS so I am using a Pinnacle Capture Card to capture the video to my hard disk. I am using Nero Vision to capture and burn the video directly to the DVD. I am still new to DVD authoring but it looks like the video from the VHS loads up into Nero Vision but when Nero tries to write to the DVD, the DVD drives and then Nero crashes when I push the DVD back into the drive. I did keep the error log which I will post at the end of this post.

Here is the information on the video that I have captured on my hard disk from Mediainfo. I also treid capturing the video to my hard disk and then burning the video. The output below is information on the file on my hard disk. I would think data being burned directly to the DVD is the same.

Here is the part of the log that shows the error information. There is more to the log but I cut it out as there were not any errors.

I have also contacted Nero but they have not responded yet.

    Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to burn dual or single layer DVD?
When you setup Nero Vision did you set it for DVD5 or DVD9?

  3. Not sure what you are asking but when I choose the type of format, my choices are:

    1. DVD-1 (Nero says I cannot use this format because there is not enough space on the DVD)
    2. DVD (Nero says I can choose this and it will give "very good" quality, total space needed 4.37GB with 4.38GB on the disk)
    3. DVD-9 (Nero says I can choose this and it will give "excellent" quality, total space needed 5.41GB with 7.95GB on the disk)

Does "DVD" mean DVD-5 by default?

Encoding is set to fast encoding or one pass vs high quality or 2 pass VBR.

    Thanks, Bill

Yes DVD is DVD5=single layer type
Problem is the bitrate your file is showing is 9383 video and 448 audio total 9831 kbs and run time 1h 28min.
Your original file is 5635 kbs and same run time, so it looks like you are encoding into DVD9 7.9GB (5.41 GB file size). In that case you have to burn Dual layer DVD=DVD9.
It make no since to increase bitrate of the file because it will not improve anything, since original is at lower bitrate.
3.5 GB original file will definitely fit on DVD5 without loss of quality.

Do you have a 3.5GB file on your HD that plays correctly?

  6. All,

I downloaded WinAVI and converted the file to a DVD format. I then used WinAVI to burn the DVD formated file to a DVD and it worked like a charm. I did not try to burn the MPEG-2 file directly to DVD as it would have been interesting to see if WinAVI could handle that. Needless to say, my impression of Nero is souring by the minute. I do need Nero for capturing the video so unless someone has a suggestion for a better capture program, I guess I will have to keep Nero.

    Tinker,

I am not sure what you mean. When Nero Vision starts up, the default value is DVD. I did not change it to DVD1 or DVD9. Are you saying that I should have used different media with Nero?

    MysticE,

I have several movies on my hd but I am not sure about the size. I have 28 Weeks later and Fracture. Both play fine on my hard disk and I have burned them to DVD. They are both AVI format I believe.

    Thanks

I do not know what happened, but the file Nero encoded was twice the size of original.
I do not use this software for that, but I am glad you got results.

  8. Tinker,

Neither do I but I am glad you pointed that out. I see where the Mediainfo says the file is 3.5GB. Where do you see where Nero encoded to 7GB? Thx

Look under Writing Library:Created by Nero
    Video#0
    Bit rate:9383Kbps
    Audio#0
    Bit rate:448Kbps

General#0 (I assume that is your original file)
    Bit rate:5635 Kbps
Running time on all those is same 1h 28min.
So at approximately double the bit rate you will get double size file.

This is what you mentioned that Nero say.
    3. DVD-9 (Nero says I can choose this and it will give "excellent" quality, total space needed 5.41GB with 7.95GB on the disk)

  10. Tinker,

You are referring to the Mediainfo output. The Mediainfo was a report I created that gives details on the file. I was looking at the Nero Error log which is the second report under my initial post. All I know is Nero doesn't seem to do what I want it too. Could be user error or ID10T on my part but as I get better at this, I will come back to this thread. When I right click on the file and hit properties, it says the file is 3.5GB.

    Thanks

I still did not get answer from you what you used to burn. If it was DVD5 than that is the reason why Nero failed, since according to Nero the file is for dual layer DVD.

  12. Sorry. Yes. I was using a DVD5.

I understand what you are saying. Nero is looking for a dual layer DVD and I have a single layer DVD in the drive. That would explain why the drive door opened up as Nero wanted dual layer DVD...doh!

Well WinAVI is not the best choice. ConvertXtoDVD would be much better. There are also quite a few free apps available that also produce great results. They tend to be much slower but the results are worth it.

  15. MysticE,

Many thanks for the list of apps. I will try them.
