ok...I just went and Bought a new dvd player yesterday, and I have a few questions about how dvd players deal w/ dual layer discs, since my old dvd player was bought in 2001, and dual layers werent even invented at that time...

I bought an RCA DRC-290 (divx certified)

what are most dvd players supposed to do when you try to ff over the layer break, are they suppsed to just keep ffding or are they supposed to stop when it get to the layer break, or does it depend on the source file type?...b/c I have tried 2 DL dvds so far on my new player, and one of then ffds thru the whole movie w/out stopping (source video file was a .tivo) but the other one i tried (source file was an divx avi) stops ffding when I get to the layer break and continues playback, if I try to rewind back over it, it stops rewding when it gets there ad continues playback...in otherwords once I ff over the layerbreak, I cant rewind to any point before it, (unless I restart the dvd from the beginning)

How come it does this on one dvd but not the other? does it depend on the source video file? or could it have been something that happened during the burn? I have only tried thos two dvd's so I will try some other ones and see what it does

according to dvdrw.com and this quote

"Do I need new equipment to play a recorded DVD+R DL disc?
No. Completely in line with the philosophy of the DVD+RW Alliance, the new DVD+R DL discs can be played on existing equipment. This is because double layer playability has been part of the DVD-Video/DVD-ROM standard since the beginning. DVD+R DL compatibility is about equal to that of current single layer DVD+R"

any recently made dvd player that can play DVD+R/RW can play dual layer.
so my question is, does the manufacturer of the dvd player even bother listing DL in the "compatible formats" list (in the manual) or is it just assumed that if DVD+R/RW is listed that it can play DL and they dont have to list that?
I'm asking cuz my manual says it can play DVD+R/RW but it doesnt say DL, but according to this site's (videohelp.com) dvd player section, it can, so I was just curious.

if any one could answer my questions I would appreciate it...thankx

For a layer break to stop an FF or REW, and return to 1x playback, is common, even on pressed discs. It depends mostly on how it was authored, and how the player reacts to DL media.

Pressed is how commercial discs are made. They are not burned like you can do. It is a completely different process. They are pressed in a pressing plant from master stampers. You can do research yourself on the internet if you want to learn how this works.

Burned DL discs may not work 100% flawlessly, even on current DVD players. Weird things like you see sometimes just happen. It's just the nature of the product. For best results, ONLY use Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. If you use any other disc, and I am not exaggerating here, you are asking for problems. Only a few years ago the DVD manufacturers actually claimed it was "impossible" for there to ever be consumer burnable DL DVD discs. They finally found some dyes that enabled them to work, but the whole process of making these discs is much more complicated than single layer discs and the discs don't always work 100% perfectly. That's just how it is. If you can't live with these odd things happening from time to time, you need to stick with single layer DVD discs.

I've seen more issues with player support of +R or -R media than I have with DL media. My original Panasonic DVD player from 2000 plays DL media without any issues.

Disc playback issues (when using quality media), even for SL media, are usually player related. After a quick search online, your player doesn't have very good customer feedback and suffers from several playback issues.

One of my friends has a DVD player that will not play DL media at all. I was quite shocked. Unfortunately I don't remember the model number. It plays the first layer of DL discs flawlessly and then shuts down when it hits the layer break. I'm talking about burned discs here, not commercial DL discs which play fine for him.
