I don't know where to post this question. I found the hack code I need (Philips DVP5140), but there are no questions accepted on that board. The instructions are very simple and apparently work easily for others. I can't do a thing with them. After turning on the unit and opening the tray, one is instructed to press "setup" on the remote and use the right arrow key to navigate to the preferences page. Nothing happens when I press these keys. I'm looking for further help.

    Cheers,
    Colleen

Using the remote control that came with the DVD player press the Setup key (it may be labeled Menu). You should get a list of preferences across the top. As you press the <- -> keys on the remote the topic across should highlight to the next topic, etc. Once you get to right topic then do what the rest of the instructions tell you.

Not to be an a**hole, but does your remote have the batteries installed? I'm being serious. Some people use universal remotes (myself included) and don't ever load the batteries in the original remote.

Nothing happens when I press setup, that's why I'm stuck. It should be a simple process, I know. Very odd, not to mention irritating.

I had the same thought, actually. Yep, the batteries are in there, in fine working condition.

It is possible but unlikely that the player itself is broken and refusing to respond to the remote. You need to determine if the problem is that you are not holding the remote correctly or if the batteries are bad. Try replacing the batteries with new ones. If that makes no difference, then get very close to the player, say 1 or 2 feet away, and be sure that the remote is pointed directly at the player. It's been a while since I've done something like this to my Philips DVD player (different model from yours) to change it to multi-region mode, but I have a vague memory that it was a little odd how it worked to change the region code. You migiht look for instructions for another Philips model as it could be the real problem is that the instructions for this particular model are a little off and you just don't have enough experience to know how to deal with it and some instructions for a different model might be somewhat similar but more accurate. For example, it might be a mistake to open the tray before pressing the remote and the instructions are not correct when they tell you to do this.
