    Hi folks,

Have mercy on a rank newb, please. I have done a search on this site and google regarding not being able to see the subtitles when ripping a DVD and have been able to make little sense of them (which is my shortcoming rather than the fault of any of these posts or guides). I hope someone can give me a simple step-by-step "do this."

Using DVDFab HD Decrypter and DVD Shrink (latest versions), I copied DVD "Ten Canoes" to my puter but was unable to see subtitles on playback. Subtitles did show up on one of the little "Extras", though. I did a little research and DL'ed DVD Sub Edit v 1.38. It was looking at the main screen on DVD Sub Edit that I said "dear god, I need help here."

Thinking I would start from scratch, I've delected all the copied files from the dvd from my computer.

Really all I want to copy is the main movie. I'm assuming I should be able to do that and keep the sub files, if only I can find them... okay I'll hush up now and hope for the best. ANY help that can be given is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

  2. Hi-

I've worked with the R1 DVD of 10 Canoes and had no trouble with the subs. I decrypted with DVD Decrypter and reencoded with CCE, but what you did shouldn't produce a different result for the subs. You do know that there are no subs for the heavily accented English narration/voiceover, don't you? You only get them for the aborigine language parts. Or maybe you just didn't turn on the subs in your software DVD player (PowerDVD?).

They showed up on the outstanding "Making Of" documentary because they have to. You can't turn them on and off as they're "burned into" or "embedded in" the video.

What happened when you opened the VOB files in DVDSubEdit? Did you see the subtitles? If you can see them, then they're there, and you should be able to play them if you turn them on. Do they play when you play the DVD on the hard drive after decrypting? Or neither the decrypted files, nor the DVD Shrink processed files show any subs? What about when you play the retal DVD sitting in the DVD-ROM? What about when you play the retail DVD in your standalone DVD player sending to your TV set?

Am I missing something? Even if he see them in SubEdit, how can he turn them on without either Menu or editing Pre command in the movie?
He mentioned, he copied Movie only.

  4. If he/she turns them on when using a software or standalone DVD player. You know, like by setting them for "On" in a subtitle menu, or using the remote control to make them appear. You shouldn't have to edit any menu commands. And they should automatically show up if opening VOBs in DVDSubEdit.

Yes, he/she wants the movie only, which means without the extras, not without the subs.

    Thanks
I did not know you can use remount without menu to turn them on.

Hi, and thanks for replying to my query.

I actually delected all the files I had copied the other day, and just now re-ripped the main movie only with DVD Fab Decrypter. Tried to open the VOD files with DVD Sub Edit... it shows that there are 4 of them in the Video_TS folder - VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2, VTS_01_3, and VTS_01_4. When I go to open one I get an "inconsistent data in subpic at LBA##### Unknown command 151." This happens with any of the VTS files, and happens in different places if I try the same one twice. Then DVD SubEdit closes. Is this because I ripped only the main movie instead of the entire disk?

So I guess this is actually a new problem? *sigh*

Should I try VSRip instead, mentioned elsewhere on this site?

And yes, manono, I know the subtitles are only in some scenes, not when the storyteller is talking. Thanks for asking about that, though. I absolutely loved this movie BTW. I'd like to make copies of the extras too because they were pretty neat but I'm thinking I'll get a much better quality copy if I leave them out.

Once again, I'm grateful for any assistance.

Oh and I'm a female -- thanks for not assuming.

EDIT: I should add that due to real financial constraints, I'm restricted to freeware. TY

EDIT #2: I just tried to play the movie using DVD Shrink, which I was able to do the first time I ripped the entire disk. I'm getting an error message from DVD Shrink now though, so I assume something happened during this 2nd rip. Going to dump the whole thing once again, rip the entire disk, and I will let you know what happens when I open the VOD files with DVD Sub Edit, once this is successfully done.

Hi. Okay, I've recopied the movie using DVD Shrink. When I play back in DVD Shrink, I see no subtitles. When I open DVD Sub Edit and one-by-one open the VOB files, I see the scenes with subtitles (actually I'm pretty sure I'm seeing ONLY the scenes with subtitles). Sadly, I haven't the faintest idea what to do at this point. I've read the DVD Sub Edit user manual and it seems to be geared towards editing the subtitles which I don't want to do. I'm assuming that what I'm seeing at this point with DVD Shrink on playback is what I'd see on a burned copy. All I want is to be able to make a burned copy of this movie with subtitles.... If someone can tell me how to do that, that would be great. TY.

If you see subtitles in DVD Sub Edit, just burn the video onto a disk.
Once in DVD player find subtitle button on your remount and turn subtitles on with that.
It is exactly like manono say.

  9. OK, now we're getting somewhere. You open all the VOBs in DVDSubEdit, and you can use the slider to scroll around and you can see all the subs, right? So, now we know they're in there, and should show up in a player. In your earlier post, I don't know why DVDSubEdit couldn't open the subs, but it must be related to how DVDFabDecrypter decrypted the files, but I don't really know exactly how it could create a problem for you. I don't use it often, preferring to use DVD Decrypter whenever possible, and RipIt4Me on newer stuff, but I've used it a few times with no problems.

I don't know anything about the DVD Shrink player, as I don't use Shrink. Maybe someone else can comment on that aspect of your problem. Don't you have a regular software DVD player with which to test, something like PowerDVD? And have you burned it to disc yet, perhaps to a DVD-RW for testing, to try in your standalone DVD player sending to your TV set?

I suggested opening the VOBs in DVDSubEdit only to find out if the subs were in there. It looks like they finally are, and aren't corrupt or anything funny.

Now you have the DVD movie ready to go? You have 2 IFOs, 2 BUPs, and 4 VOBs, right? Then you're almost ready to burn them to disc. First set them up in Folders. Create one and name it, maybe, TEN_CANOES. Inside of that will be the AUDIO_TS folder along with a VIDEO_TS folder. Stick all the DVD files (VOBs, IFOs, BUPs) inside of the VIDEO_TS folder. The AUDIO_TS remains empty. Get ImgBurn and follow this guide to burn it to a DVD+/-R disc:

    http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4632

I burn at half speed. I have a 16x NEC burner, and use 16x DVD+Rs, and burn at 8x. Seems to work OK. Good luck.

Thank you for that wonderful detailed guide, Manono. All seemed to be going well until I got to the very last step, the part where I start the burn, and I get this message:

    DeviceIoControl(FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME)Failed!
    Device: [1:0:0] TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652L 0803 (E (ATA)
Unable to lock volume for exclusive access.
    Reason: Access is Denied.

There's a Try Again button which I hit a couple times, with predictable results. WTH?! I should mention that this is a new computer and the first time I'm trying to write any kind of disk. Oy, vey.

  11. Hehe, if it's not one thing it's another, eh? This is out of my league, There might be a hunderd people at this site that can read of your problem and instantly know what's wrong and how to fix it. But I'm not one of them. About all I can suggest is to reboot. Other than that, I haven't a clue. Maybe someone will come along with a more helpful suggestion. Or try and google that error message to see if anyone else out there has ever received that message.

    SUCCESS!!!!

After I posted, I thought, "maybe I can just ignore this stupid error message and go on" - because after all, there was a "continue" button, too. It burned just fine and it's all there with subtitles and ever' thang. Thank you again so much for your help!

    *does a little happy dance*
