stand alone DVD recorder for 900$

I visited Circuit City in my area (near EastRidge mall, San Jose) and was surprise to see 3 Panasonic DVD recorder listed for 850$, 900$ and 950$ respectively, ALL SAME MODEL, I forgot the model number!
I always though that stand alone DVD recorder cost about 2500$ these days.
Has anyone have one of these to tell us how it works in term of compatibility and quality.
