I'm not sure what I screwed up on my laptop, but I can only hear the background audio. I can play the same file on my desktop and the voice is there. I'm using WMP classic homecinema in both machines.

    Other things:

I also have VLC player and WMP 11 on my laptop. They both have the same problem as well.

I play other avi files, and the voice is fine.

The only audio sofware I remember downloading is ac3filter.

I got all these files off the web.

Check your AC3filter settings. Chances are you are dropping a centre channel instead of sending it to the left and right outputs. Fixing the problem might be as simple as telling AC3filter you only have two speakers.

I am assuming, of course, that the audio is Ac3. Why else would you download AC3filter ?

I think you are on the right track. I unplugged the headphone jack and voice came out of the onboard speakers.

The file(torrent) I downloaded was named Lost.S05E10.HQ.HDTV.AC3.Divx.avi. I figured from the naming convention it need AC3. It looks like ac3filter is set to stereo.

What I am actually trying to do is play the file on my TV. I only have a headphone jack (no audio out).

  4. WMPHC has its own AC3 decoder. Make sure it is set to downmix to stereo.
View -> Options -> Internal Filters -> Transform Filters -> AC3 (double click on)

Yep, looks like I am set to downmix to stereo.

    More weird happenings:

Upon a closer look, my desktop will play voice sound, but only out of one speaker.

I swapped out my headphones for my pc speakers on my laptop and did get voice to come out of it. Results were just like my desktop. Background sound out of one speaker, both background and voice sound out of the other.

If I can't get this figured out I guess I will just use my pc speakers... :P

mediainfo the file to find out what audio it has - it is 2 or 6 channel ?

If you listen through the headphones, do you get correct audio through both sides ?

It says it's 6 channel. I'm thinking the cable I got for the tv is crap(only one speaker actually puts out any sound). Headphones and my pc speakers get the same result background music out of one speaker and voice and background out of the other.

Gave it a try. I only have two speakers so I heard:

Front Left and Rear Left out the same speaker

Front Right and Rear Right out of the same speaker

    Center out of both speakers.

Is there a way I could send you my problem file for you guys to listen to?

  10. Yes, if you only have two speakers that's what you should have heard. Did you use the same player you used with the problem video?
