Maybe this is the wrong section of the Forums for this question, but I've got an old Hi8 camcorder that just completely died and I have lots of footage on Hi8 tapes that I'd like to convert to mpeg or other formats. Can anyone recommend a deck for this?
    Thanks in advance!

It would be cheaper to just get another Hi8 Camcorder but if a deck is what you need heres one Sony EVO-9700 or Sony Hi8 VCR Model EV-C200.

Most, (if not all), Sony D8 Digital Camcorders will read those Hi8 tapes. You should be able to find an older model on-line for a relatively low cost.

That's a good point about a camcorder being cheaper - I'm finding some Hi8 camcorders online for 99 cents LOL! Does anybody know if a deck will give me any advantage over a camcorder, or is it negligible at this point?

  5. Camcorders sometimes will not play other recorded tapes. Decks are more forgiving and seem to accept a wider range of tracking tolerances...
