I recently downloaded a avi conversion software called Prism. I convert the avi files to MPG, and some of the movies turn out fine, but more often then not, the audio is out of sync. I don't know if it is the conversion software, or if there is another type of video type I should be converting to(MP4, DivX, etc.)If anyone can help me with this problem I would appreciate it.

Welcome to VideoHelp!
Unfortunately, there's no one application capable of successfully converting any video file you throw at it. Different files (even with almost identical specs) may take different means to be converted to other formats.
If you take a look under CONVERT left, you can select from and to formats (like AVI to MPG) and get a list of guides covering this kind of conversion.
But before we continue: As you don't seem to know what format you want in the end - why are you converting at all?

I just want to convert avi(since that is the only kind of file I can seem to download) to any kind of file that will be able to be burned onto a DVD, or be viewed on my Windows Media Player. I just always assumed that MPEG was the only type of file that will be able to be burned or viewed. I've also been downloading the avi files off of a program called uTorrent. I havn't been able to find any other programs that download movies, so its the one I've stuck with, and the majority of the time, files download as avi. So I'm stuck with either finding a better program that converts avi files or finding a different program to download movie files.

VSO ConvertXDVD is a good tool for you, does what you want and it is cheap -
If you go the freeware/donationware route, FAVC and The FilmMachine using either HC Encoder or Quenc have worked great for me. I believe these two encoders are included in the installation of FAVC and The FilmMachine. Whatever you do, do not install K-Lite codec pack. It caused nothing but problems for me. If you do not already have it, install the Xvid codec http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=3822&s=52

If the audio is off-sync, try checking if you have the right frame rate on the output file. Some programs don't compensate for a changed framerate.

I downloaded a software called DVD Flick, and it worked ok for converting, but then when I went to view it, Windows Media Player wouldn't recognize it neither would WinDVD. The program says that it is designed to convert files into DVD files. I don't understand how I can't view the file in my DVD playing applications and yet expect the final burnt DVD to work on any DVD player?

Or look up "AVI to DVD" under Convert left: https://www.videohelp.com/guides?searchtext=&tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=AVI+...or+List+Guides

perhaps i could just mention at this point that for a relatively modest financial outlay you could purchase a DVD player that will play back a number of Divx, Mpeg4 or other files. i got a cyberhome that will play 90% of my avi's, and raw mpegs besides. my friend has recently bought a Pioneer that has a USB port in the front, which will play files directly off a memory flash stick. i am envious of this! the pioneer also plays WMV files too, which my cyberhome doesnt -but then it is a more expensive machine.
if you consider the time and effort you night put into converting these files, perhaps an avi-playing DVD player might be a cheaper option.never absorb anything bigger than your own head -
Amen. When taking in consideration that a DivX AVI capable player is priced around the same as most commercial AVI to DVD offerings, the choice is easily made. I very rarely do any AVI to DVD conversions these days, and when I do, mostly to try out some new conversion software.
My mod chipped PS2 works nice as AVI player too - Load up SMS, insert USB memory or USB HDD and play.
