I am doing media conversion to MPEG-1 (720x480) to be played cross-platform. The files play smoothly in Windows media player, but play jerky (frames are dropped) in Quicktime 5.0.2 (both on PC and Mac G4). Is the MPEG-1 codec in Quicktime bad? Is there any other MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file media player for a Macintosh other than Quicktime?

I'd suggest you use something else to play MPG then QuickTime, it may be good for MOV/QT movies, but it pretty much sucks for MPG.

Unfortunately, there is no other MPEG-1 player on the Mac platform other than Quicktime or it's engine. Sucks, but true.
