I'm wondering, based on your own experience, what dvd recorder is considered the best in terms of being able to successfully burn recorded content to dvd. I have a Toshiba RD-XS32. It has become so frustrating to use I ready to chuck it into the garbage.
Thanks

Toshiba RD-XS32 is a good unit but Pioneer , JVC and LG all have good units also. Panny is OK but you need to know what unit is the best, Trial & error. I personal like ES-10....

The issue revolves around burning content to dvd disks. The recorder will work through the entire burn process, then a message will appear saying the disk can not be played. I've used just about every brand-name disk available on the market. I've read in some other posts that the problem lies with the recorder itself and it is not correctable. I've downloaded and installed Toshiba's firmware fix, but with no success.
If you have any suggestions, I'd be grateful!
Thanks... -
I hope you do not mind a few more questions.
Do you know how to identify the manufacturer of the media you have tried? There are only a few manufacturers but lots of brands. It might help to know if you are using the same media under different brand labels.
Does the recorder complete the copy and then finalize the disk before you see this message? -
The types of blank media I've used are maxell 1x-16x speed, memorex, kodak, verbatim, sony. Only sony works, about half the time. The disk goes through the entire burning process, including finalization, when I press play for the disk, a message comes up saying it can not be played or it is damaged. The disk will not play on my other player as well.
Thanks. -
sounds like the problem may be that the drive has/is going bad or the burner has/is. Try cleaning the burner's lense. Any computer shop has what you need to do that job. If that doesnt work, and you feel confident enough, I would suggest you open your unit to see what kind of hard drive it uses and buy one with the same exact specs and manufacturer. They shouldnt be that expensive ($50-$60) and maybe less if you are luck. Replace the drives and see what happens. Also use only good media, which can be found with a search on this site.

It sounds like you may have a dirty or low output laser assembly. The dyes in the disk vary by brand and can have different sensitivity to the burn laser. The fact that you are able to burn Sony 50% of the time indicates that all else in the recorder is ok.
The best way to clean a laser lens is to take the unit apart and use lens cleaner with a cotton Qtip.
[edit] One other possibility is that the XS32 is an older model is it not? It may not have been designed to accept the higher speed media like X16. -
Toshiba has a firmware update for the D-R4 to allow use of 16x discs, they may have one for the XS32 too. They don't have updates on their website. You have to call them and have them send a disc.

I think the xs32 does seem to develope a problem with the dvd burner its worth a clean but I think it may need replacing. Sorry but have you mentioned trying Verbatum disks? From what I've seen the xs32 should be worth sorting out as it seems to cover many bases.
