I have about 25 vids and I want to cut parts out of all of them. I tried using virtualdub but for some reason, the screen shows half of one frame and half of another in the same screen. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong? I have direct stream selected for audio and video.
Also, I tried using avisplitter and that worked fine but for some reason the last 3 seconds of the vid were corrupted. I have checked "extract video without recompression". I wasn't sure if that was the reason?
Are there any other programs that could be recommended to cut avis? I'm more wanting to cut out the parts I don't want. That way I don't have to cut 3 or 4 times and then stitch them together. Also, I tried avs remaker and I had a problem with cutting out exactlly what I wanted. I'd always have a split second of the scene I wanted to cut out.

VirtualDub always shows two screens. The second is a preview screen if you modify the video with filtering, etc., and play it back. You should also know the term, 'AVI' is about as much information as saying 'video'. There are hundreds of different formats and combinations possible with that container name.
But assuming a common one...
Xvid, for example, only has a keyframe every 300 frames by default. Everything between keyframes is referenced to other keyframes, to make the explanation simple. What this means is it's terrible for editing. If you cut anywhere but a keyframe, you will likely have a bad cut and sync problems when trying to join them. That is also why you aren't able to cut a clip exactly where you want and save it in direct stream copy. It's not the editors fault, it's the format.
You can try the newest version of VDub, something like 1.70. It has a 'smart rendering' feature than allows cuts anywhere, then just re-encodes at the cut ends. That's about the best you can do with highly compressed formats with direct stream copy. That is also how they are highly compressed.
Or you can re-encode the whole file after you do your cuts.
