  1. Hi!

I am going to run VHS material through a framestore to make it SDI and then record on Digibeta or DVCAM. Now, the framestore takes both composite and Y/C so i wonder .. will a VHS player with SVHS out preserve more colour and detail from the source?

Do you have such a thing? VHS players with S-VHS out are very unusual.

A better option might be to get an S-VHS deck (they are cheap now) and play the VHS tape in it. Often, this yields better results than a VHS deck. (I've seen similar improvements with Video 8 recordings played on Hi8 decks).

VHS (and SVHS, Hi8, etc.) record Y and C separately to tape. The separation is made during the recording process. A VCR with S-Video output keeps the Y/C separation. Composite adds Y and C into a single coax thus requiring the next stage to re-separate them.

    Use S-Video when available.

There is no such thing as an "S-VHS cable". It is an "s-video" cable (separated video).

"S-VHS" was a shorthand for "Super VHS", which is a higher res version of VHS format.

    Don't confuse them.

If you record Vhs Material thru Digibeta or DVCAM, watch out for head switching on tape. You can see it with the overscan, but if the Vhs is average condition you might see it on the screen.

  6. Thanks everyone for the extensive answers!

And yes, I know SVHS is the tape format and S-Video is the signal, but mistakes happen
