  1. I use the Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 to capture the video from my VHS camera.
the raw video file is an mpg file -- I do not know which type...

The raw video file plays fine, however after editing, using the nanoPEG editor 2.3.1 from nanocosmos (came with the Hauppauge - it also saves the file in an mpg format), however, it requires a special codec in order to play -- the one cool thing about the editor, is it does not re-encode the video image -- it uses the original frames so you don't have any picture loss...

I can play the video at home (WMP Vista Premium), but not at work (WMP XP) and most of my friends can not view the video either.

it's weird -- at work, the WMP says it is "Acquiring codec..." then it says "Codec Acquired" then it says "WMP encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help" -- of course the web help is no help at all

    any suggestions?

    Thanks, Steve

  2. Your work computer and friends need an MPEG2 decoder. WMP will not download an MPEG2 decoder and Windows doesn't ship with one.

Media Player Classic will do the job.

  4. Yes, several free players have MPEG2 and AC3 (audio) decoders built in: MPC, VLC, KMPlayer.

It could just be my version, or it could be a conflict with another application, but I find MPC to work much better than VLC. VLC shows my MPEG2 files in "relief," that is to say that what should (in the picture) be light is dark and what should be dark is light.

I've never used KMPlayer, so I can't comment...
