    Am I doing this right?

I select file browser from the background menu and then select the movie.

Although the movie is already loaded, it seems to load it again which takes a while. That seems uneccessary when I only want a still or short clip.

You'll probably need to make yourself a clip.

When you're finished, select that as your file for the menu.

I don't think the movie is pre-loaded entirely, this would require a ton of RAM and isn't necessary. It seems like the video loaded is on a different track than menu background so the video would have to be added in separately and if its a big file then expect a longer load time, which is normal.

Its pretty much a trade off of space/performance/convenience in its design...not alot of option when it comes to video handling.

It shouldn't take awhile to load, are you running directly off the DVD disc for your source? Faster if its on the HDD and it might depend on your system's raw power... on my Core 2 Duo I hardly noticed that long of a delay.

It's coming in from an avi file.

I suppose it's not tht big a deal, maybe 15 seconds plus the time it takes to navigate to the avi file on disc. (I'm inpatient). It just seems so inefficient after the way Magix handled it.
