So has anybody heard of a label that I can put on a DVD-R after I burn it that will allow it to be played in a settop player? Can I write on a DVD-R with a perm marker in the meantime? I would like to get a label system working, but have heard that labels on DVD-Rs screw thing up. Can anyone confirm?

Yes the labels you buy and stick on th DVDR's will cause problems.
If you want to print on DVDR, it would be best if you purchased a CD/DVD printer and ink-jet printable DVDR's
There are several printers on the marketas well as printable media , Signiture is a good one,
I use it with ComposerPro - 2 DVD-GP/CD-R w/Signature IV Printer

You can use labels! I use the CD Stomper Pro on all my CD-Rs and DVD-Rs and I've had no issues yet with either. I play both types in my set top Philips DVD711 player.
There is no reason why you can't put a sticky label on a DVD-R if you can put on on a CD-R. As long as it's evenly applied and doesn't have bubbles in it, you won't have any problems!

Not that I don't believe you (trust me I want to really bad), but I have heard that sticky labels mess up DVD-Rs. I guess the next question is, has anyone actually seen this happen? If not I am tempted to go that route. Maybe the mfrs are just blowing smoke... ?

Ive had problems with sticky labels and my CDR/RWs...but Its a DVD player specific problem I believe, for the same disk works fine on my neighbors machine.
