I thought I'd change pace in the polls for a little while - at least one poll.

Have you ever had a broken bone? The closest I ever had was a finger sprain in middle school. It was a sprain not a break so I just need a flexible splint type thing.

I never played organized sports in school since I had allergies and asthma. I'm sure I would have had some more serious injuries if I had been more active back then.

    How about you?

Just a separated rib from coughing too hard from pneumonia. Still moves around a little five years later.

  3. Yeah.

    Broken ribs while rock climbing.
Broken toes, fingers at work. Lots of ways to break things in the building trades.
Never broke anything while motorcycle riding. Not quite, although I've laid a bike down a couple of times.

I'm betting Zapper has broken lots of things as well. :P

Broken collar bone from parachuting with a towel off of a picnic table (I was two). Broken toes from a dock plate that slipped out from under me. I landed stiff legged, between the dock and the truck. Hurt my back, my legs, and then had the edge of the dock plate land on my toes. I'm lucky they weren't cut off. Also broke my heel when I fell of the roof building my house.

I broke my arm three times in six months, that was a bit annoying. I must have been around 10-11 years old, just falling when playing. The plaster came off and within a few weeks I was back in the waiting room at the hospital. Fortunately it was the left arm, I am extremely right-handed.

Both wrists, collarbone, foot, toes. I had my first broken bone way back in 1958 (age 7) when I was climbing on a billboard and fell off and broke my left wrist. Years later I developed an arthritic condition in that wrist stemming from that break.

Broke my wrist while riding my bicycle (when I was young). I didn't know it was broke until I got into a fight a couple of days later at school. Punched the guy in the face and the pain shot out my ears.

Broken left wrist when I was nine or tenish. My mother said that I was having sympathy pains for my older brother who had a broken leg at the time. The little fall happened early afternoon and later that evening when my arm was swollen up like Popeye we deciced to go to the ER. Multiple breaks in the wrist.

Multiple broken fingers and toes just from being a boy and then working in construction like fritzi says. I think that there are only like three accounts where there are actual X-Rays to back up the claims, but the pain is exquisit, and you will learn to tell the difference between a sprain and a break.

Possible and most likely broken rib or more when I "Saved" a friend in a fall, he walked away unhurt and I walked around like Quasimoto for two months! (No X-Ray to back up my claim, but I was stupid for not going to the ER, even if they wouldn't have done anything for the actual injury, I could have used some pain killer)

And the most painful undocumented break/fracture? At maybe 240 lbs and the best condition I was ever in in my life, I started to chase a guy through a parking lot, and after about three pumps out of the starting block and I just made it to full stride standing up and hauling ass, maybe the fastest I ever moved in my life. I hit my right shin on a trailer hitch sticking about two feet out of a pick up truck! Holy @#*&! I thought I was gonna die! Getting spun around and slaming into the pavement was nothing even with the loss of skin. I almost passed out! Cussing, squeezing it, praying, holding my breath, Breathing fast and shallow, nothing was helping with the pain! And to anyone that says no X-Ray, no break. Let me hit you in the shin with a two pound hammer or a baseball bat! Twenty years or so later and I still have bone growth bumps on my shin bone!

I have some medical training and expeirence and seen some bad breaks, but the two that are in my opinion the worst. Broken ankle, not sprained, but actual breaks. Yeeee-ouch!!!

The other, while not visable, and pretty rare is a broken pubic bone that ruptures the bladder. I have been told twice that this is the most painful injury there is maybe next to major burns.

I slipped on steps in 2002......Right leg went inbetween the steps as I fell......
Right leg had both bones broken in 2 places......(shattered)
Had a FULL leg cast for about a month..
Then was "pinned" and wore "rings" around my leg (metal) for about 8 months.......
The pain when the pins were finally pulled out was excruciating to say the least.
Took about 6 more months using a walker and then a cane ...
    Horrible experience..........

Not one broken bone. In fact, never been hospitalised or had surgery at all. Must be one lucky b*stard.

  17. Notice how so far it's only guys posting?

Okay, let's see ... I broke my collarbone when I was riding my bike and got knocked into a ditch by a car ...

Got a concussion, too, though I was wearing a helmet; I also got a concussion and cracked rib when I was hit head-on in my car when some numb-nuts driver crossed the center-line and got me.

Broke my thumb in high-school while being a demo in gym class with another guy on how to grapple with somebody else so you don't get hurt. Obviously that didn't work!

My most painful bone-related injury, though, was not a broken bone, but a bent left radius and ulna (forearm bones) when I was about 12 -- I was running in the house (of course!) and caught my toe on a rug, went down like a sack of bricks, and must've tried to stop myself with my left arm. I don't remember exactly how I hit but I do remember it hurt like a son-of-a-b****.

And it just kept hurting. Y'know how when you're a kid you sometimes whack yourself and it hurts for ten minutes or so and you shake it off? I tried that, and it just kept throbbing, I have never been so miserable in my life.

My mom was sure I'd broken it, so we go the emergency and get it X-rayed and no break, but I had bent the bone almost to the point of breaking. It had rebounded, almost, so there was just this slight curve to it ... ...

To this day I still have a bent left arm. But it's barely noticeable, like maybe a couple of millimeters off. But man oh man did that hurt!

Not that active any more thanks to work and other circumstances, but I still find ways to injure myself fairly regularly...

How I ever escaped breaking bones between birth and ~22 years old, or killing myself outright (usually inside or astride various wheeled implements) I can't say but there's been enough pain and the like!

Bicycle is a big culprit, or should I say bike and slippery surfaces. I'm steady as anything on my feet, or a dry road, but rubber + wet grass, loose gravel, algae-covered slabs (next to very hard walls at the bottom of a steep hill), etc are lethal. Destroyed at least one cycle that way, as well as a lot of skin, massive bruising etc.

Ah the exuberance of youth ... that saw head and chin broken open and needing stitches on seperate occasions, impaling of leg on a broken branch sticking out of the ground (still got the dimple scars for all of them), fingers caught messily in bike chains, being knocked out running under chairs / swings / tables etc (very young hehe, its had a lasting "impact"), pencil shavings and firework cinders in the eye, bruised (probably hairline fractured) coccyx from overly pushy teachers trying to get an unathletic kid to do hurdling with the inevitable landing-straight-on-ass-from-4ft-up... and all the rest.

Since about university age (when I finally scraped together the credits for a car) it's been motor vehicles and jobs providing most of the fun in this area... burns from exhaust downpipes (discoloured patch on skin that just won't fade), being clonked in the head by various parts that worked loose at unexpected times, cuts on fingers from recalcitrant piston rings and other such bits... not to mention glass cuts by the thousand doing bar work, and whatever radiation damage i sustained working in a hospital's nuclear diagnostics department.

I had a stress fracture in my right foot ... got it in my last year of high school. I had to wear a "walking cast" for about 6 to 8 weeks (I forget now).

It didn't really hurt much as it was only a "stress fracture" but wearing the cast was damn annoying.

    As to how it happened?

I think it happened because in my last year of high school I was working on a play and I would always jump down from the stage to the floor where the seats where and always would land on my right foot. I was very overweight then (ummm still am LOL) so I think that plus all that jumping and landing on the same foot is what did it. If I had to guess the stage was a good 3 feet high give or take but remember I did that multiple times a day for weeks on end.

Two broken bones (at one time) in my right wrist playing full-contact volleyball on a hard gym floor. Remember what they told you when you were a kid...never fall forward with your arms straight out in front of you?

I haven't broken any bones, but I do have several compressed discs that cause me trouble occasionally.

Ten years ago I had chronic back pain 24/7 for three years. Chronic pain is absolute torture, and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone -- except for my ex-boss.

Following that chapter in my life, I gained a new respect for people and their problems - whatever they may be.

had a bike accident when I was 14. lost 6 inches of bone from my fibia, broken femur and tibia. but at least i got a year off school. and the bone they took from my hip for the graph, makes me look slimer. and i got blamed for witing off a landrover. still now im 37 people dont stare as much, or maybe I dont care as much.

Forgot about my nose when I was 10 and a girl I really liked pushed me off a rock, of course I was lying on my stomach with my hands in my pockets guess what broke my fall.

Was in a car accident that knocked out some teeth. Along with the teeth went part of my upper jaw. Needed a bone graft afterwards.

    Yup.

On Friday, 10/06/06, I was headed to Raleigh to work, and had just left the house. I glanced at the clock (5:52 pm.), and the speedo (55). I looked up, and the other guy was right there. He was 45 - 50 feet away. The police report says oncoming traffic, and him, was also at 55 mph.

It doesn’t take long to close that gap at such speed. I didn’t get my foot off the gas. The report says he was attempting to pass...

I remember the impact. Square, and head-on. Mine stopped there - 55-0 in zero - no left, right, up, or down. 55 - 0.. His car got knocked back 15 - 20 feet. His time ended a few hours later...

I got pretty wrinkled up. I squeezed the airbag pretty tight too - I think all the way to the steering column. Over 14.5 G's (negative) decelleration. In 2-3 months, I should be okay.

I knew Christ as my saviour before. Still do. I know now that he’s got something for me that he wants done. That’s why I’m alive. HE is too.

    Good news.

My wheelchair was picked up 5 weeks ago. I wasn't tearful.

I haven't used a crutch for 2 weeks now. AND, I was able to push my lawnmower. I'm bipedal again, but I still got a strut that is SO ghetto .

Be happy. You don't know when your time will come.

Still hobblin' at 10 months plus and alive
