I think I've got PowerDVD on my laptop but I'd like to find a free software download
(or a trial if needs be) that shows the bitrate of the dvd as it's playing.

I only want it to test the bitrate of recorded footage using a JVC MH300 dvdrw, and compare direct to dvd / hd>dvd. The second dual-pass method is supposed to increase the VBR ie lower in still, higher in action. So I'd like to see if it's worth it. I have a dvd player which shows bitrate but it doesn't look accurate to me.

MPEG 2 Validator will graphically display the bit rate of MPEG2 files. I just tried it and it can read .VOB as well as .MPG.

I thought PowerDVD had a "details" option (D key maybe) that displayed video/audio info. Try right-clck on video & check the pop-up menu

Right-click on the video screen and check Show Information.

no not powerdvd, windvd thats the one, sorry. I probably have it some where on disk though.
BTW I mean't to monitor bitrate in real-time as opposed to for the whole vid, but I think from the replies you've understood that.
I'll try 'mpeg validator' it sounds good, cheers for the replies.

After searching for similar, I've downloaded 'Bit-rate Viewer' too,
it seems like a handy, and easy too use utility.

    Thanks, I've tried MPEG_Validator and it's great.
    Everyone should have it.
Second by second bitrate and clear graphs for quick comparisons.
And it gives the frame size so I could check for the bitrate when the frame size half's.

I've used it for my tests and the JVC HDD>DVD dualpass method does extend the bitrate levels by +1Mb and -1Mb, so now I know.
