Burning .mov to DVD

What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to take short .mov files and burn to DVD. I've downloaded and tried out about 5 converters (coverting from .mov to .avi). No matter what I do I lose quality - so much so that it just isn't worth it. There are skips in the movie and the audio never matches up with the image.

I am very new to this whole thing and won't deny that I am lost. All I want to be able to do is burn short video's from my digital camera to a DVD. What do I need to get this done? And how do I do it?
