  1. Hi,

    I'm using codec packs for some time
    Some programs don't work cause they use some other splitter or something than the codec pack

    So I want to get started with downloading them one by one.
    Can you give me a head start?

    How do i begin with this?
    What do I need to playback mkv?
    you've got splitter and codecs and what else do I need?
    Goes digging in videohelp for better movie quality :-/ ?

  2. First uninstall any codec packs. You may even need to reformat and install Windows if your system is too badly messed up. Then install Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow. Or use a player that has almost all splitters and decoder built in. Like VLC or KMPlayer. Then you may not need to install any codecs at all.

    fyi you can use codec sniper to remove codecs. Though be careful some codecs should be left alone - use cautiously.

    Not as easy as it sounds once you have already infected the system with such products ... very easy to break them .

    Uninstall any codec pack to start with , and reboot system after .

    The new version of ffdshow works well , dont use any other older version .

    Filmerit , backup each main section header before you start unpluging codecs .
    Codecs can be left in system32 and restored later if required .

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Haali_Media_Splitter for mkv

    Gspot , a tool you should not be without .

    Vlc can do much , but you need to know more info on outputs ... very easy to make a mistake and waste time .

    Programs that no longer work should be uninstalled , reboot , reinstall will return them back to normal operation and their default decoders and splitters .

    You will have no problems with codec packs IF:

    -- after a clear (re-)install of your OS, the codec pack is the first set of codecs
    you will install on your computer;

    -- you do NOT do a complete install of the codec pack;

    Afterwards, you can add other codecs that were NOT included in the codec pack
    of your choice. Example: I have an old version of K-Lite Mega Codec Pack,
    and during its installation process I chose not to have ffdshow, because
    ffdshow+{the other codecs} == redundancy+interference. Months later,
    I could add CoreAVC and two DV codecs that were not part of K-LMCP, and
    things are still running fine.
