I finally joined youtube.com and submitted my first video upload:

Total file size (Video + Audio) = 57,295,824 (58.444 MB)

    Video was:
    FourCC: xvid/XVID
    Resolution: 320 x 240
    Frame aspect ratio: 4:3 = 1.333333
    Pixel aspect ratio: 1:1 = 1
    Display aspect ratio: 4:3 = 1.333333
    Framerate: 29.970000
    fpsNumber of frames: 7090 (100)
    Stream size: 57,295,824 bytes
    Bitrate: 1937.552436 kbps

    Audio was:
    Audio tag: 0x55 (MP3)
    Bitrate: 128 kbps CBR
    Channels: 2
    Sample rate: 44100 Hz
    Stream size: 3,785,456 bytes

Then, youtube converted this file into a flv1 (Flash Video 1):

    Size: 9,616,621 bytes (9.171 MB)
    Container type: FLV version 1
[ Video track ]Codec: Sorenson H.263
    Framerate: 29.962546 fps
    Bitrate: 325.248218 kbps

    [ Audio track ]Codec: MP3
    Channels: 1
    Sample rate: 22050 Hz
    Sample size: 16 bits

So, youtube reduced the video bitrate from 1937.55 kbps to 325.25 kbps and changed the audio from stereo to mono and reduced the rate from 44100 Hz to 22050 Hz

    from youtube.com:

"Your video is limited to 10 minutes and 100 MB.

    We recommend the following settings:
    MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
    320x240 resolution
    MP3 audio
    30 frames per second"

Here is some info if you want to maximize the quality of your video uploads to youtube

Duration Video Bitrate Audio Bitrate Total Bitrate FileSize-KBytes FileSize-MBytes
    2 min. 6000.00 384.00 6384.00 95760.00 93.52
    5 min. 2600.00 128.00 2728.00 102300.00 99.90
    10 min. 1250.00 128.00 1378.00 103350.00 100.93

Maximizing quality is this manner will assure the best possible quality when youtube transcodes the file into Flash Video (Flv1)

    One last point:
As far as I can determine youtube converts your video into 320x240 but DISPLAYS it as 448 x 336 (a 40% increase)

I would like anyone to share their experiences with uploading and displaying youtube videos as well as other sites that do the same thing - my goal is to share videos using the highest quality possible with respect to clip duration and file size limits

By the way I used VirtualDub to encode the XviD and I use Riva FLV Player and/or FLVPlayer4Free to view .flv files and Riva FLV Encoder to transcode .avi files to flv1 and two small utilities: flvmdi.exe and flvmdigui.exe to correct "METAData" re the .flv files
    (all of these are "freeware")

    Cheers
