  1. Hi
My laptop has a VGA and S-VHS output... it has ATi Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics
the HD-TV only has the S-VHS input...however when I link it up the picture quality
is a bit fuzzy...as if it weren't 'Tuned' properly or summit
is there a VGA to SCART cable or anything?

I may add that the HD-TV is a BUSH 32" it doesnt have PC/VGA...
    2xSCART/ 1xHDMI / 1xS-VHS / 1xCOMPONENT (YrPbr) / 1xS-SCART (Yellow video and left&right audio)
I have a VGA to COMPONENT cable but that didnt work on both laptops AND
another HD-TV with both laptops so I think that cable must be damaged (unless there
is a special way to setup the cable which i dont think there is)

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.. Im wanting to play games on the TV
and watch HD-Content that I can download

    THX

  2. S-VHS? I'm guessing you mean S-Video a S-VHS was a VHS videotape format.

It will look fuzzy as that is not a high resolution input. The facy that the TV has no VGA input means you need to feed it a Standard TV resolution and refresh rate signal to get anything

Be more specific for TV model. Most HDTV sets have other than S-Video inputs. S-Video is analog SD quality.

Laptops are usually limited to S-Video or VGA out. Some new ones have analog component and/or DVI-I out.

  4. I do mean S-Video but S-VHS is another term for S-Video (well here in UK it is.. its even in my BUSH LCD32TV022HD Manual... as S-VHS Input and has S-VHS on side (on TV) next to where the S-Video goes in...

as stated the TV is a 32" BUSH LCD32TV022HD

The Laptop has VGA and S-Video out and TV has S-Video in , Component (YBPbr) , Video in (Yellow, red, white cables) 2xscart and 1 HDMI

The graphics adapter handles 2nd TV output and allows higher resolutions than the TV which is 760x1300 (roughly) 720p TV ,

The TV is a replacement for one that broke, its same make but diff. model and on the last one the S-Video worked much better but i couldnt get the resolution correct. when set 2nd monitor to about same resolution as TV it would actually be larger and the screen had to scroll up/down/left/right to see rest of desktop.

However on this replacement TV the S-video picture isnt clear... its on in full colour as with the TV before but it has slight discoloration all over the screen like a slightly mistuned TV...?

SO is their anything I can do?
the laptop has S-video AND VGA out..can i buy a cable or converter?

..Iam also going to be building a PC for myself soon, is there a Video Card I can install to do this with PC?
also what about if the PC is 10ft away...is there long cables? or wireless setup?

    Thnks

Laptop has VGA (analog RGB) and S-Video out. TV wants S-Video, analog component (YPbPr) or HDMI (digital RGB).

Unfortunately S-Video is your only match and laptop display adapters can't be replaced.

There is no easy way to convert. VGA to YPbPr format converters exist but are expensive for the good ones.

If you just bought the TV, ask the retailer if you can swap for a model with VGA input.

VGA to component is non-standard. It requires a specific display card that changes the RGB pins to YCbCr. That "adapter" is just wires and connectors.

Read up on VGA, DVI and HDMI standards here.

Best option is to get a TV with VGA in. If all you have is analog component or HDMI here are your options.

For analog component best to get a NVidia or ATI display card with "PureVideo" or "AVIVO" technology and analog component cables. These will output as a second monitor as 480p, 720p or 1080i. 720p is the best selection for that TV.

For DVI-D to HDMI you will need a card with two DVI-I connectors and a DVI-D to HDMI adapter cable. Go for a display card with "PureVideo" or "AVIVO" technology for best results. The TV manual should detail the resolutions accepted. At a minimum this will be 1280x720p (preferred) or 1920x1080i. The monitor may also accept 1366x768 native resolution for that TV.

  8. Thanks for that...

Can i just ask....if S-Video is Analogue and wont work properly with my LCDTV then why does the TV have the s-video input on it if its not going to display the signal properly?

One thing you could try is to get an S-Video to SCART adapter and run from computer S-Video to one of the SCARTS using that. At least one of the SCARTS on the TV should support S-Video (you usually find with a TV with multiple SCARTS that one supports S-Video the other supports RGB). A suitable adapter would be something like this http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=13372&doy=12m8 but my local Tesco Extra has them on the shelf.

Bear in mind though, that Bush is about the lowest of the low in terms of quality so it is quite possible that two different sets will give different quality pictures. For probably less money you could have had one of these http://www.intekx.com/product_info.php?cPath=17&products_id=142 far better picture quality and VGA input too.

S-Video can be used but is analog SD quality (less than 720x576). Computer text will look fuzzy but video won't look bad.

The way it works, different desktop sizing can be used (800x600 or 1024x768 typical choices). Then the desktop is converted to analog luminance Y and PAL chroma C and sent to the TV as standard definition analog video. 800x600 is best for text.

Some laptops only permit a clone of the desktop, others allow setting separate resolutions or "theater" modes for media display. In "Theater" mode, all media runs a full screen on the S-Video display.

  11. Also using the S-Video will result in part of the desktop being off of the edge of the screen due to overscan.

I go along with everybody that says return the TV and get one with a VGA port if you want to connect the computer to the TV. You will avoid a lot of headaches that way.
