I just switched over to a new machine and it came with Vista which isn't too bad but now I need new video editing and DVD authoring software. I usedSony Vegas 7 + DVD on my old machine and loved it, but I have heard about compatibility issues with Vista. I have played around with Ulead and Pinnacle stuff but was always disappointed by the lack of control you have over your menus and such. The ones I tried you were only able to change and move around things; you weren't able to create you own. You were basically stuck with their templates. So, what I'm looking for is decent video editing software that is compatible with Vista and allows full customization of menus. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are quite a few editing/authoring programs that work fine with Vista. Here's a Vista compatibllity list. Just scroll down to the 'Video' section: http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List

Cool, thanks for the link. That list says Vegas is compatible with Vista, but I know I've read about some problems. Has anyone else heard of this?

I have no real information per se but Sony is constantly upgrading VEGAS so I'd be surprised if the newest version has issues with Windows Vista.

Sony haven't certified Vegas for Vista. That isn't say it won't run - it may well run quite well - however Sony don't support it running under Vista at this time. My understanding is that one of the main reasons for this is the built-in DRM in Vista that prevents correct playback of HD Video, even when it is private video and not commercial discs.

Alright well, the only programs that I have used that let me customize dvd menus like I want were Vegas and the Adobe stuff. Are there any more out there that let you create your own menus?

Is this just a Vista issue? I haven't encountered any DRM issues with private HD (MPeg2, VC1, H.264, divx or HDV) videos with Vegas.

I'm now building my first Vista machine. I may have it done this week.

There was discussion about this during the lead up to Vista being released. Something to do with HDCP being required to be able to see HD video streams when using Vista, even if they were private videos, not commercial. It may have been a beat up, but it is curious that Vegas still is not supported under Vista, even though there has been at least one point release since Vista came out.

I played with Windows Movie Maker a little but it still didn't allow full customization. It gave more control than some but you couldn't control everything, like move buttons around, and make separate menus.

Come on! I mean do you have a 5-6 hundred $ worth of good software and you don't give it a try?
I would try Vegas combo - I trust it more than any other video editors. If you have glitches contact Sony and let them now (us too).
