  1. I have two older Philips DVP642 units, one purchased about 4 years and the other about 2 years ago. Both have been upgraded to the latest firmware as of a couple of years ago (don't remember the version # off the top of my head but can post it if necessary). They have always played all sorts of burnt X8 DVD+R discs and never gave me any trouble. Then I recently purchased IMATION X16 DVD+R discs that the player refuses to even recognize (after lots of spinning and whirring it stops and displays NO DISC error message).

I know that X16 discs aren't supported by all DVD drives and players and that in some cases the problem is fixed by a firmware upgrade. So my question is, has anyone been able to fix a similar issue through a firmware upgrade? If so, which version fixes it and where can I get it? (The Philips website says none are currently available.)

    Thanks in advance!

Philips no longer provides firmware updates for this player. And the "new" version of this player has its own issues. Your best bet is to just get different media. This player isn't very picky about media, so finding something else that works shouldn't be a big deal.
