I know this is an old player. Is there an official/unofficial firmware that support DivX 6/Ultra?
If not, is there a player with similar capability for the same price ($30 from CC)?
I've tested my TV's upscaling capability. It seems to be very decent. I don't think I need to spend money on upscaling player.
thanks!

The player supports Divx 6 playback in all firmware but NONE of the firmwares support Divx 6 menus. Very few players support Divx 6 menus and I don't think any that do are as cheap as what you are looking for.
My HD TV also does upscaling and it's so good that I am getting truly excellent results from my old DVP-642 and I also see no need to by a DVD player specifically for upscaling. Do set your DVP-642 to progessive output (you can do this in Setup) for best results, assuming your TV is capable of progressive display.
