Example: Converting avi to mpeg
I am thinking of upgrading my spare 400 mhz celeron to 1.2 gig. How would the conversion time to compare to my athlon 800 mhz?
Do I spend the $120 to give myself 2 machines to encode on or do I take the money and spend it more wisely?

You probably won't see much difference between a Celeron 1200 and an Athlon 800 (if anything, the celeron will be slower).
The problem with the Celeron is that it can only use SDRAM (memory bandwidth is the most important thing in video encoding). -
That is fine due to only having sdram in both computers. 256 pc100 with the 400 mhz celey and the athlon 800mhz has 384 pc 133 in it.
So I should spend the dough on having 2 machines to convert with or keep putting cash into the main box? -
I have an Intel P3 500 /w 256MB RAM. It takes me roughly 3-4 hours for a 350MB file. I've been reading people who take like 20 hours. Is there something I'm doing differently?
