VirtualDub Capture problems

I'm having a bad problem when I try to capture 640x480 Lossless at 29.97 fps. The set up is the standard menu (not custom setup) and I shut down the total screen to capture using F6. When it captures it drops a lot of frames but the real problem is that the capture rates is all over the place and runs around 51-54 fps. This is way to fast to capture and is obviously pushing my CPU over the limit. Somehting must be set wrong.

I've uninstalled all of VirtualDub using the built in uninstall functions in Auxsetp program. I then re-installed everything. My system is not the best in the world but I have been successul in tuning it and installing all the fixes such that I can capture 640x480 AVI in MMC 7.5 with less than 1% drops. The quality is great. I've also used AVI_IO to capture at the same frame size and the problem there is that it runs out of internal buffers and stops. The other problem I have is that if I try to use the custom setup for frame size and codec, there is a very long list of options, but if I select any but UVUY or YUY2, I get the error, "codec not supported". I assume this indicates that my ATI AIW Radeon card has not enabled this format. Can this be changed via the MMC Reg tool?

Last questions,... There are windows codec like VTR1, VTR2, are they any good. What I would like to get to is 24 bit RGB out of this card. Is there any way to that. Is there a codec that does a little bit of compression but still does a good job in capture.

I trust you changed the framerate to 29.97 in the menus? If not...

Go into Capture Mode, then:

Capture menu
Settings
Frame Rate: Type in 29.97

Also, try the Huffyuv codec for capturing if you haven't already. Just go to Google and type in Huffyuv and hit "I'm feeling lucky". It should take you to the Huffyuv homepage.

Yes I had set the frame rate to 29.97. I also have Huffyuv installed but it only functions inside of VirtualDub,.. and I've tried it before... but I will try it again.

(actually I haven't used the other 2...but I have used Ulead Videostudio4 and ASUS DVCR and Live and I much prefer Vdub)

I capture PAL 704x576 @ 25fps, UVUY, no compression AVI, with my ASUS 7700 deluxe. I drop about 1 frame per 1000 with my 1GHz PIII OC'd (<10% CPU load in Vdub...which seems to matter!) and audio synch ON. NO noise reduction, filtering or display during capture.

I love the histograms and levels filter, and the frameserve capability (I use it with TMPGE)

What I don't like (but can live with) is:

- WDM (+ wrapper) cap driver with VDub won't work (for me, anyway), so I'm stuck with 704 (Which is all the ASUS vfw capture driver can do). I'm sure the WDM driver would give me 720....which would be good for the hell of it.

- Stiping and multisegment capture won't work at the same time. For some reason I would just like to be able to do it!
