Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm doing some research for a friend and haven't been able to find any answers on the web.

A friend of mine has been looking for a CD recorder for some time so they could transfer all their old audio tapes and reels onto CD. Since they don't have a DVD player they decided to kill two birds with one stone and just get a DVD recorder. Will a DVD recorder also burn to CDs? I know most, if not all, PC DVD burners will do this but will a stand alone DVD recorder do it?

Here's the one they're looking at.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There aren't any DVD recorders that can do what you suggest. I've heard of, but never actually seen, a very very few models that supposedly could record VCD format on a CD-R disc in addition to being able to record DVD format to DVD discs, but nobody makes a standalone recorder that can create audio CDs. Companies used to make audio CD only standalone recorders and I've got an old one from about 8 years ago, but I don't know if anyone makes them anymore. It's a really long story, but the reason they don't make audio CD record capability has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with the RIAA and royalty rates. Plus including such capability would add to the cost of a recorder and since you can make audio CDs much easier on PCs these days than standalones, there's no real demand for it even if they did satisfy the RIAA on the royalty payment issue. The old standalone audio CD recorders used more expensive discs that paid special fees to the RIAA and they weren't designed to work with normal data CDs. Allowing someone to record video in VCD format, if supported, is pretty trivial and has no issues with the RIAA because it's not audio CD format.

  3. I think all of the Lite-On AllWrite series of recorders record to audio CD, as well as VCD and SVCD.

Unless they've got real compu-fear, I'd say they'd be as well just to record it into the PC with a half decent sound card and burn straight off to CD that way.

Allows better control in terms of monitoring levels, track splitting/reordering, noise reduction if needed, etc.

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

Thanks for correcting me, Baldrick. I honestly hadn't heard of any that could do this, but it looks like there aren't many that do. Note that at the link provided in Baldrick's 2nd post that I think LiteOn has switched the record times for VCD and SVCD because they make sense only if you switch them. The record time they have listed for VCD is way too short and the one for SVCD is way too long.

I think Phillips used to make one like that, and there were probably others. You might check out some catalogs such as J&R Music World. I hadn't thought of tapes, but one of the main uses for this was supposed to be for going from vinyl to CD. The alternative would have been going directly into a computer, and that gets you into questions of how high a fidelity are you aiming for ? Assuming your standards were very high (audiophile) and you already had a really good turntable / cartridge and preamp, some threads I read suggested that the weak link would then become the computer sound card. Most were said to be not good enough, and a really good -- and much more expensive -- professional grade one was suggested. (I suppose the same issue would apply with high quality 30 i.p.s. reel to reel . . . . ) In a standalone CD recorder, you might get into questions of how good some of the unit's chips were, issues of noise, and like that. I found these discussions interesting, but came to no conclusions . . . other than that converting a good sized music collection was going to involve a lot of work, a learning curve, and some green.

I have two Liteon 5045 with 160 gb HDD and three 5005 units, No HDD, and a ilo R04 that thinks its a Liteon 5005x. They will all burn any DVD + or – R/RW and a CD – R/RW.
They will play VCD or SVCD But Not Burn Them.

The 5045 are older units and are no longer made as US models
Some models with Allwrite, like the 5006, also will.
I do not feel that the unit you list will do as you want. [Why a Combo Unit]
You should look at the Liteon site that was given [The 5005 should be a good choice]

I am not generally into music disks but have cut some with these units. Using a stand-alone recorder will most likely not produce a disk as the original [menus and all]. They will play and are fine for my purpose. If you want a disk that is as the original A PC is most likely the only way to go.

I am not aware of any other stand-alone units besides some Liteon that will burn a CD but that doesn’t mean they do not exist. The video help listing is good but reflects what some users have reported and may not always be correct,. Check it out and Good Luck

A friend of mine has this and is very happy with it:

    http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3697391

It is a CD recorder only (no DVD) but it works and works well especially from LP's.
