Mini Movie suggestions.

Hey guys, I really like this site because thrue out the years I have came here and learned about video editing, dvd editing etc. with the help of guides. Anyways what im doing is im taking a dvd movie and I want to take certain scenes out of it. So im sitting here puzzled trying to figure out whats the best and fastest way to do it. I want to take certain scenes from a movie, then put them all together and create a small movie. Not just put all the scenes together and burn it to a dvd, I would like to add a menu some music but nothing professional just something good. I orignally tried to hook up my dvd camcorder to my dvd player and just record the scenes directly to the dvd cam that way its in good quality and it would be a whole lot easier to do it that way. But once I tried that, I hit record on my dvd cam then this message pops up saying "copy protected" and I was like ah crap so no go for that idea. I also thought of using 123 dvd converter and since it has features of being able to convert any scene from the dvd, like I can put from chapter 2 convert from 1:23 to 5:35 and it would convert it to mpg,wmv etc. What I would really like to know is what would you guys recommend? should I use 123 dvd converter and just convert the dvd scenes into mpg's? and if yes what is the best quality to convert it to, so then I can compile them for my movie and burn it. And the outcome would be good quality. or do you guys recommend certain software that can do all of those things for me. I thought about getting roxio media creator since it has many features but im not sure yet, so help me if you can thank you.
