I captured a mini dv tape with Windows Movie Maker, this gave me a single AVI file.

I tried WinDV but a single tape was captured in about more than 40 AVI smaller files, why?

I guess I will use WMM instead, so I don't need to re-join all these avi files that I get with WinDV.

To get a single file with WinDV you need to set the discontinuity threshold to 0 and the max avi size (frames) to something like 150000.

Why? Just import all the files in sequence to Movie Maker. Movie Maker doesn't care if you have one or separate files. Actually separate files work better if you want to trim the clips.

oh....so once imported will WMM re-create and save as a single AVI, and then I can delete the other files?

Yes. Drag each clip to the timeline in the order you want. You can trim the front or back of each clip.

For export use DV-AVI standard not wmv.

It'll work great with the video side, but I'd bet there are glitches at the boundaries of the clips in the audio side.

    Safer alternative is to recapture.

I don't use WMM, but that has never been a problem for me in Vdub or AviSynth.

It's not a problem in WMM either. WMM will split scenes from a single DV file anyway. It will even do it from WMV files based on scene detection. It's not 100% accurate, but few are.

Well, I will just recapture that tape with Windows Movie Maker and get a single continuous AVI file.

And what was the point of this thread? WinDV can and will capsfer to a single file when properly configured. Segments can be joined without audio issues. And you already knew that WMM could capsfer to a single file.
