The AGP slot is not too likely on newer motherboards. Most all are PCI-E or higher. If you are not into gaming, there are quite a few economical PCI-E video cards that would work for you. Vista is very graphics oriented, so I wouldn't go for the cheapest card.

For Vista, you need a minimum of 1GB memory for good performance. 2GB is about right for the best cost/performance ratio. Dual channel memory is also recommended. Two matched 1GB DDR2 6400 modules work well.

I would go with a dual core CPU, either AMD or Intel.

With AMD I have the best luck with Nvidia chipset based boards. I have not had good luck with VIA chipset boards, or to a lesser extent, other chipset MBs. The socket AM2 CPUs are the most common at present. I currently use Gigabyte MBs, which seem to work well.

4 PCI slots is a little harder. But most full size ATX motherboards should be able to do that. It's also common that new motherboards only have one PATA controller for two drives. So you might consider using SATA hard drives as that would free up the PATA controller for your optical drives. SATA also uses smaller cables and is easier to set up. There are a few SATA optical drives on the market, so that's another option. Two hard drives, one for boot and one for storage, etc., works well.

It pays to do a lot of research when getting a new motherboard. Do a Google search for reviews or check these sites or similar:

    Good luck.
