    is there a way to convert a drm-protected WMV file to AVI?

    If you have the original license (i.e. you purchased the WMV to begin with) then FairUse4WMV might work

    i have the licence, but its a pain in the ars to deal with...
    i dont mind doing it once, but would like to not have to again.

    what about using a screen capture program like deskshare myscreen recorder pro?

    fairuse would be a better solution. Once the DRM is stripped you can re-encode as you need to. Using a screen cap program will take a generation hit, and risk dropped frames and other glitches.
