The owner of the biggest supermarket in the north-eastern Polish town of Zambrow claims to have all but done away with shoplifting, by letting offenders choose how they prefer to be humiliated.

Two years ago, Eugeniusz Kaczynski set up a publicly displayed cage in which customers caught shoplifting were kept until police arrived.

He recently refined the idea asking shoplifters caught red-handed, if they want to await the police in the cage or have their picture prominently displayed in the shop window.

Mr Kaczynski says so far, they have all preferred the photo alternative and after they are let go, they never come back.
