I’ve converted FLV video to AVI from YouTube, but when I tried to edit with VirtualDubMod there’s some kind of black overlay that blocks visualization. (The AVI video plays fine in VLC and WMP.) Is there a way to remove this, so I can save only the relevant portion? Thanks for your help.

Display card setting problem. Assign the overlay to the monitor you are watching.

    ^Ed,

Thanks for your reply; I’m not sure if I understood your explanation of monitor setting is the reason for my having difficulty seeing what’s displayed on Virtual Dub Mod. If that is the case shouldn’t I have problem with VLC and WMP, also?

My computer ADVANCED DISPLAY PROPERTIES setting show for Overlay setting…

    Overlay Warning!
The overlay controls are automatically activated during playback of any video file type that supports overlay adjustments.

I only have problems with FLV converted to AVI; I have no problem with seeing MPEG VOBs or other AVIs with VDM. Only thing I can think of is it has some kind of protected copy rights but then it plays fine with media players. Is there a hidden setting I accidentally tweaked without knowing?

VLC and virtualdub mod default to drawing pixels on your desktop. This is CPU intensive. Players usually use overlay to output or display video.

I can't talk to your display card settings. They differ. ID your card and someone may know the overlay settings. You can find them in your manual.

The display card manufacturers didn't take much effort at making this easy to understand.

  5. VLC and WMP use DirectShow codecs. VirtualDub uses VFW codecs. You probably don't have a VFW FLV1 decoder.

Ffdshow has a VFW FLV1 decoder. I don't think it's enabled by default so you have to manually enable it after installing.

If in converting to AVI you also converted to a different codec, make sure you have a VFW decoder for that codec. You can verify the AVI codec with GSpot.

One other possibility I can think of: the Panasonic DV Codec has a bug where it tells the system it can decode codecs other than DV. If you open an AVI file with one of those other codecs you get no picture.

    VLC not used DirectShow filters.

That's correct, it uses its own built in decoders. But more to the point, it doesn't use VFW codecs like VirtualDub.

Thank you to all of you who responded. I do have VFW decoder installed as you see here:

I do not have Panasonic codec installed, either. (I don’t remember ever installing it. To make sure, I did a search in my computer, which revealed nothing in my system.)

How do you mean installing it manually? I’m at a loss…

  9. Going by your screenshot the FLV1 decoder is already enabled. Can you try using a recent version of VirtualDub rather than VirtualDubMod?

^I tried with VD as you suggested, but I only get the sound, no visual. One difference is I’m able to play the video clip smoothly all the way to the end without stuttering or stopping like VDM. What I see in the black screen is some figure is moving about because it’s not 100% opaque, only 95%.

Well, I finally figured out what the friggin’ problem was! I spent last three days on this son-of-a-gun problem. I installed & reinstalled ffdshow many times but wouldn’t you know it all it took was one little check mark here:

Even though the VFW configuration showed that codecs were loaded, there must been previously configured setting was conflicting with the new.

At any rate, THANKS GUYS FOR YOUR ALL YOUR HELP!!!
