I have an mp4 file that has h.264 video and aac audio in it. My friend split it with hjsplit and was sending it to me in pieces. However, I only have the first few pieces. I have played pieces of mpg, wmv, avi, and various other video files split with hjsplit using a combination of vlc player and mpc. However, this mp4 file piece will not play for some reason. What other options do I have?

Generally if VLC won't play it, not much of anything will. What does it do? Just a blank screen and it runs through the time counter in a few seconds? Tried renaming a copy of it to .avi?

Just my opinion, but H264 and AAC audio is not a great choice for sending in pieces over the net. A very highly compressed video doesn't respond well to being sliced up.

If you do want to send it in that format, I would have sent the last section and the first section before the rest. That would at least give the player some references to work on for decoding.

I have never used hjsplit, but I know how programs like this work. You won't be able to play anything until you have all the pieces and reassemble the complete file. It's not possible to play the individual chunks because of the way the splitting is done. No, there's no way to change the splitting so you can play the chunks either. That's just how this type of splitter works.
