What did you expect ? 4:3 is taller and narrower than 16:9. In order to be encoded in a 16:9 frame, black bars must be added to the sides to kept the correct aspect ratio.

If you want it to fill across the screen from side to side without being squashed then you need to crop from the top and bottom of the frame. For NTSC you need to take 60 lines form the top and 60 from the bottom, then stretch the height back to 480 lines.

Finally, if your source was 16:9 DV, make sure your project properties are set to NTSC DV Widescreen, and that you encode using a widescreen template.

I am shooting SD 16:9 at 24fps with a SPX800 and use raylight to convert the
resultant XMF files into AVI so vegas 7c will 'see' them. I am using a Matrox codex that allows Vegas to play on the timeline dvcpro50 video (AVI).

Naturally I use a Vegas project that is NTSC DV widescreen at 24fps. But when I render out the Vegas 7c timeline it shows as black bars on the left and right and the video is compressed inward.

I have tried to render at widescreen DV at 24 and the same problem occurrs. what do you think I am doiung wrong ? I ahve tried the various pixel sizes to no avail.

I have avoided jumping into true HD as most people lack a true HD DVD player anyway. What's wrong with a DVD SD in 16:9 ? Versus the true HD DVD ? Is the diff that real ?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Your first post said.."hi, im trying to render my 4:3 video to 16:9 widescreen format.". Your second post said....."I am shooting SD 16:9". What format is your original material in Vegas?

Sorry, I am not the same shooter that is shooting at 4:3 and hoping to output burn a 16:9 DVD.

I am shooting at 16:9 DV50 XMF and trying to output it via Vegas 7c
onto a DVD at 16:9 SD.

    Thanks

My Apologies. I mis-read that. Are you getting a full 16x9 Preview window and what are you rendering with?. (software). Also a bit curious that your using NTSC Widescreen at 24fps. 24fps is PAL.

24p is progressive pseudo-film. PAL is 25fps, NTSC is 29.976. Both interlaced.

Have you set your project properties to match your source, as well as your output properties ? They both play a part.

right click on the avi in the media manager in vegas and in media properties make sure the source is set at 16:9 - or adjust it here so that the pixel aspect ratio is correct

many thanks: I am using the spx800 and shooting unto P2 cards 16:9, 24pa (adavnced). I am using Vegas7c with their DVD program. My goal is to make progressive scan DVDs. I could afford the price of a used spx800 but couldn't bite the bullet for a used Varicam. So I am not shooting true HD. I am convinced most people think they are seeing true HD on thier DVd players !
Thus, I am staying away from making true HD DVDs for awhile.

I am trying some settings within Vegas and am confused with the whole "pulldown" theory. Since I am using PA that means 2:3:3:2 pulldown; but when do I need to even think of pulldown since my goal is to make a DVD at progressive scan ?

    Thanks again,

    Patrick

I downloaded the free Matrox DVCpro50 codec so Vegas would 'see' my DVCpro 50 video but Vegas 7.e still refuses to accept DVCpro50 video on it's timeline unless I first convert the P2 MXF video to AVI and then Vegas accepts the AVI P2 video.

I am shooting at 30p and have selected this format to avoid all the pulldown issues with 24p.

My goal is to make DVD and CDs.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

PS: Cam is spx800 shooting at dvcpro 50 at 30p.
