    Hi,
I've been trying to no avail to burn a vcd. My specs
    Compaq Armada E500
    Sony CRX1600L (firewire)
    Nero 5.5.1.8
    TMGEnc

The .dat file plays fine in windows once the vcd is burned, but receives a no disk error when trying to play back in VCD compatible Sony DVD player.

I used TMPGEnc to make the .mpg and am sure everything was done right. I exaustively followed at least two tutorials on it. And Mpeg Properties reads it as a correct VCD mpg. Nero accepts the mpg and successfully burns it but the VCD does not work other than in the Computer.

I tried reducing the burn speed from 12x to 4x as per the instructions on VCDhelp.com

As I am new to VCD stuff (but learn fast) I understand that noone who may read this is compelled to help me. But I am continually amazed at the persistence of help I have received on various issues from random people on the internet. My sincerest gratitude.
    Thanks
    Carl

  2. I know how you feel about no one responding so I thought I'd give my two cents and hope they help. Does your DVD player play CDRs and/or CDRWs? Try playing an burnt audio disc on CDR/CDRW whichever you prefer and see if it plays it. If it indeed plays, I would imagine that your DVD is not VCD capable, but to be sure I'd buy a VCD from www.eurkeamovies.com (not an endorsement, I just trust them as a VCD retailer) and see if the VCD plays then. Hope that helped.

  4. but does it play cd-r??

vcd can be written on cd-r or be a professionally stamped cd (ie not burned)

most sony dvd players can play professionaly stamped vcd's but more often than not, will NOT play burnt vcd's on cd-r media.

i saw your post...you have to look on the compatability list on this site.
depending on your dvd player, it may play cdr, cdrw, or both...the sony's don't seem to play cdr but they will play cdrw which is really weird, i think but whatever...Thanks all for helping me solve my problem.
