Hello everyone, I had a question on a particular type of media, I'm looking to "restock" my supply, and ran across
Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R Media 4.7GB Silver Thermal Lacquer 200 pack for around 55 bucks. Is that good media? What is the "Silver Thermal Lacquer"?

I'm sort of a newbie when it comes to all the media stuff. I've heard good things about Taiyo Yuden, but was confused as far as the Silver Thermal Lacquer goes. Would they work well for burning dvd's?

    Any help/suggestions would be great.

    Thanks in advance,

    Derek

"Silver thermal lacquer" means that it's silver colored and thermal printers can print labels on the discs. You don't have to print a label on the disc if you don't want to. I looked into the cost of thermal printers for these discs and decided that for me, it wasn't worth the cost. Others think it is. The thermal discs costs a little more, so there's nothing to be gained if you don't want to use a thermal printer with them.

Anyway, yes, these are normal DVD-R discs and since Taiyo Yuden is considered the best DVD media there is for a lot of people, they will work fine for burning DVDs.

I have burnt over 300 of them without any problems. I bought them from Amazon.com. 100 for $28.00. Buying them at 200 a pack does save a couple of bucks.

That's what kind of thought, but I wasn't sure. also, I've read some previous posts about sites selling 'counterfeit' TY media.

Does anyone know about http://www.cdrdvdrmedia.com If they are reputible or not?

I've purchased Phillips DVD-Rs from them before and not had any issues, but with TY being one of the best in the dvd media circle, I don't want to waste my money on a fake.

  5. I have some fakes but I have never run across fakes sold under the TY name. For example, I have some Great Quality dvd-r's from Fry's Electronics that sold for $2.50 for a 50 pack. They show a media code and identify as TYG02 but are definitely not TY. I have used the TY silver lacquer, the Valueline, and the inkjet printables and have not had problems with any of them.

The fakes can be identified by another means. The dye color of the fake is different. I noticed all the varieties of genuine TY have what appear to be exactly the same dye color. This is only a problem if you have never seen the dye color of a real TY disk.

Not familiar with that company you listed but I know Rima and Supermediastore are both reputable Taiyo Yuden sources.
