  1. what I would like to do is take the music off a DVD without the voices and sound effects. Is there a way to do that or is it impossible because they are merged together in the audio track? I know you can buy "sound tracks" on DVD but those are just the songs used. I am talking about music from TV shows like star trek or mission impossible. thanks!

Depends if the Audio is in 5.1. If it is, then maybe...

From TV, pretty much impossible. From a DVD with Dolby 5.1, you may have a little better luck with one of the channels that has more of the music on it, but the voices and sound effects are likely on all the channels to some extent, along with the music. If the music was separated to just a single or even stereo channels and no other, the DVD wouldn't sound right.

There are filters that help to separate music from vocals, but they rarely work that well.

You may be able to find some TV or DVD theme music for those videos or shows if you look around, though.

  4. Audacity can sometimes be used to remove vocals from music, but only from stereo recordings. It doesn't work successfully all the time and is quite complicated to do.
Also, Goldwave can occasionally do it as well, again with varying results.
