Is there some general rule to go by when selecting the resolution when converting a DVD movie to AVI? I have an archos AV500 portable video player that I carry when I travel. It is much easier than carrying a portable DVD player and all the videos are on the hard drive of the Archos. It plays DivX AVI's, so I have to convert anything I want to put in it. Whenever I rip a DVD to AVI, after 3 hours of processing, the final product is either stretched or squashed or really tiny on the PC screen in WM10.
Is there a standard resolution size for DVD movies that are widescreen and full screen and a standard resolution size equivalent that I can always set to when converting them to AVI?
or some formula to use? A lot of software indicates taht the resolution has to be multiple of 16, but I can't seem to figure it out.

    Thanks for any help!

Just use AutoGK and let it automatically resize for you....or do you want it to always be full screen on the av500? is it a 16:9 display?

what is the resolution of your screen, 320*240 QVGA

if so then you can't get full screen at 16:9

you can get padded screen full width but not full height to maintain aspect ratio, OR you can crop the sides of the video off and get full screen in the correct 4:3 ratio(of the display) but with the sides of the video chopped off, Super can give you these conversions

for the first one set for 320*240 open the PAD option and add 24 pixels top and 24 pixels bottom

this should give you a screen with a video section that is 320*192 and a 24 pixel black bar on top and bottom,

the video way not be a perfect 16:9 but it will be close

16:9 is likely closer to 320*180 with 30 pixel borders

or you can crop from 720*480 to 640*480 then reduce to 320*240, NO padding full screen no distortion ,BUT you will be missing the left and right edges of the movie
